The Mendelssohn-Project
The Mendelssohn-Project ist eine Zusammenarbeit zwischen der Organistin Annie Bloch und der Cellistin Emily Wittbrodt. Die beiden Improvisatorinnen und Komponistinnen konzentrieren sich auf das Präludium und die Fuge in c-Moll für Orgel von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy und dekonstruieren und komponieren seine Musik neu. Ausgehend von dem Ziel, die Zeitkonzeption des Stücks aufzubrechen, indem sie Motive dehnen und sich mit ihnen auseinandersetzen, entstand im Rahmen des Mendelssohn-Projects ein Werk mit einer ganz eigenen Sprache und Ästhetik, da die beiden Künstlerinnen ihren eigenen Charakter als komponierende Instrumentalisten einbrachten.
Klanglich nutzen sie die verschiedenen Schnittpunkte von Orgel und Cello und verschmelzen in ihrer nahtlosen Mischung aus Neukompositionen, Zitaten aus dem Original und Improvisationen neue klassische und experimentelle Klangwelten, die mit dem Hintergrund von Annie Bloch und Emily Wittbrodt in Klassik, Jazz und Volksmusik in Resonanz stehen.
Ein tiefergehender Blick zeigt den Facettenreichtum beider Musikerinnen: Emily Wittbrodt – NICA artist 2024 – veröffentlicht am 3. Februar 2026 die Musik ihres jüngsten Projekts „Wearing Words“ bei Futura Resistenza, in dem sie Text, komponierte Melodien und experimentelle Klänge miteinander verbindet. In einer Besetzung zwischen Jazz, Pop und Improvisation entstehen dabei intime, fragile Klangräume, in denen Barock, Elektronik und Pop ineinandergreifen. Annie Bloch bringt ihrerseits große stilistische Vielfalt ein: Als Organistin, Singer-Songwriterin und Komponistin bewegt sie sich zwischen Indie-Pop, Jazz und Kirchenmusik. Gemeinsam entwickeln die beiden eine Klangsprache, in der Blochs strukturelle Klarheit und improvisatorische Sensibilität ebenso präsent sind wie Wittbrodts poetische, forschende Herangehensweise.

The Mendelssohn Project is a collaboration between organist Annie Bloch and cellist Emily Wittbrodt. The two improvisers and composers focus on Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Prelude and Fugue in C minor for organ, deconstructing and recomposing his music. With the aim of breaking down the piece's conception of time by stretching and exploring motifs, the Mendelssohn Project has created a work with its own unique language and aesthetic, as the two artists have brought their own character as composing instrumentalists to bear.
Their sound draws on the various intersections between organ and cello, blending new compositions, quotations from the original and improvisations into a seamless mix of new classical and experimental soundscapes that resonate with Annie Bloch and Emily Wittbrodt's backgrounds in classical, jazz and folk music.
A closer look reveals the multifaceted nature of both musicians: Emily Wittbrodt – NICA artist 2024 – will release the music from her latest project, ‘Wearing Words,’ on 3 February 2026 on Futura Resistenza, in which she combines text, composed melodies and experimental sounds. In a line-up between jazz, pop and improvisation, intimate, fragile sound spaces are created in which baroque, electronic and pop intertwine. Annie Bloch, for her part, brings great stylistic diversity to the table: as an organist, singer-songwriter and composer, she moves between indie pop, jazz and church music. Together, the two develop a sound language in which Bloch's structural clarity and improvisational sensitivity are just as present as Wittbrodt's poetic, exploratory approach
